Twins! A Survival Guide E-Book

Expecting a baby is usually greeted with joy. Expecting TWO babies is usually greeted with panic. Across the world, twins happen to nearly 140,000 sets of parents every year.
One of those parents was Suzannah Peel, an investigative journalist and editor. Less than a year later, she and her doctor husband had a third child. But Peel says as difficult as it was keeping up with three children under 16 months of age, it was a cakewalk compared to her year of caring for two at once.
Mrs. Peel dutifully tried to prepare herself by consulting the right baby books, but only a few were truly written with twins in mind. Besides, once the twins were born, she didn't have time to read them anyway. So she conceived something else: the ebook Twins! A Survival Guide.
Through research, personal experience, a lot of trial and error, and a liberal topping of humor, Peel has produced yet another small miracle. Mindful that for parents of twins, curling up with a good, thick book is at least a decade away, Peel has compiled dozens upon dozens of easily accessible tips, tactics and strategies for managing life with twins.
No subject is too insignificant or inane: how to hire help, how to ask for help, how to manage outings from walks in the park to plane trips, how to optimize their feeding times, how to optimize your sleeping time. Peel strongly urges that all parents of twins get Internet and cable access if they don't have it already: it serves as a source of information and entertainment during those night feedings, provides online shopping, and can connect them to organizations of parents of twins.
Equally important, Peel also confronts the psychological, social and personal aspects of twin motherhood. She notes that post-partum depression is twice as prevalent among mothers of twins, but reassures, "Many days I got so wound up because I felt I wasn't doing it right. I wish I had patted myself on the back just for doing it...The fact your twins go to sleep fed and healthy means you ARE coping." And she has very wise counsel for fathers of twins: get as much initial paternity leave as possible, and "if things get stressful, refrain from telling her to chill out or calm down unless you fancy wearing...cereal."
Peel's support and advice is arranged in a easy-to-read, quick-to-reference index. The book can be read from cover to cover it there's time, or you can drill down to the information you need, including timing the birth of your next child!

'The Nine Rooms of Happiness' Tells Women How to Have a Work Life Balance

The Nine Rooms of Happiness is a help book for women in the working world who are constantly stressed out and unhappy with their lives. Each room represents a part of a person's life that Danziger and Birndoff organized based on their physical placement in a house and what goes on in each room. When one learns how to use these rooms (closing doors when they need to be closed, etc.) the work life balance can be achieved much more easily. The room designations are as follows:
  • Attic- This room looks at the expectations your family has pushed on you, both at a younger age and now.
  • Bedroom- sexual intimacy is discussed here; the kind you're getting and the kind you want. It also covers very personal wants and needs.
  • Children's Room- This area covers every stress that might come along with children, even the stress of deciding to have them.
  • Kitchen- Emotional nourishment is the focus of this area. It focuses on family emotional nourishment as well as the personal.
  • Living Room- Your social life, meaning your relationship with people at work, your friends and your social activities, are all discussed in this room.
  • Bathroom- The things that no woman likes to discuss; weight, vanity and beauty. The truth of them all is found in this room.
  • Family Room- It is what it sounds like; this room discusses family issues and stress factors in the family by focusing on your closest relationships.
  • Home Office- The daily stress of this room comes in the form of bills, hours worked, time away from home, etc.
  • Basement- This room is usually the biggest in the house, and is the foundation the rest of the house stands on. Therefore, the basement represents childhood memories and how they can affect our daily lives and mental stability as adults.
When you are balancing work and life, there are 4 steps that are discussed in the book to complete the process. Figuring out what room you're in, determining why you keep getting stuck, learning the process for getting unstuck, and finding the shortcut to the solution are the keys written in the book for achieving a good work life balance.

Bacterial Vaginosis Freedom

This is a review of the popular "bacterial vaginosis freedom" eBook, by Elena Peterson. It's frustrating that this eBook is all over the internet - but there are no decent reviews of it!
Bacterial vaginosis can be the bane of your life. If you have ever suffered from this condition you'll know what I'm talking about! Just take a look on popular women's health forums and you'll find that posts for BV (bacterial vaginosis) have an enormous amount of viewings and replies.
So what exactly do you get? The eBook itself is well presented, and has 68 pages. It is written by someone who was a chronic sufferer of BV and has found a cure. You can read the eBook and digest all the information in a couple of hours, depending on how fast you can read. There's no nonsense fill in bits - it's all good information. The aim of the eBook is to cure BV using 3 steps in 3 days. Alas, I'm not able to spill all the beans and tell you the cure - that would be a little unfair and besides would probably result in this review being taken off the internet!
What I can tell you more or less are the contents. The eBook has 4 chapters. The first chapter goes through the specific symptoms and what can cause BV. Elena Peterson has tried many "cures" and seen many medical practitioners, which she talks about in this first chapter - which ends talking about the natural approach and how and why this is the best way for a permanent cure.
The second chapter is all about bacteria and antibiotics. The eBook doesn't recommend antibiotics for a permanent cure but talks about the natural balance of good and bad bacteria, your PH balance and what the effect of antibiotics is on this delicate balance in your body. I think that what she says about the dark side of antibiotics is very relevant!
The 3rd chapter is most likely holds the reason for your purchase (if you buy it). Here she gives the 3 step cure. It is simple yet effective. You could get this information free on the internet from forums etc, but it would take a lot of time and experimentation - which is why this eBook sells so well I guess. I have seen this information on medical and health forums, but it is usually amongst lots of other formulas and supposed cures. The 4th chapter wraps it up and gives more information on herbs that have also proven effective, and information on your diet which plays a major role in preventing the condition in the first place and making sure it doesn't come back!
Having actually sat down and read bacterial vaginosis freedom I give it a 5/5 - because it's worked for many women and Elena Peterson has obviously been in this horrible situation, so she talks with integrity. The only annoying thing about the eBook is that it uses the terms vaginosis and vaginitis interchangeably with no explanation! I found this pretty annoying at first, and nearly took advantage of the 60 day money back guarantee - but let her off as it is a good eBook, which cured one of my friends of this condition. The bonuses are just that - pretty good bonuses. Another 3 eBooks. I'll let the reader decide on these, as they could change in the future (just visit the website).

The Women Men Adore and Never Want to Leave

As great as The Women Men Adore and Never Want to Leave may be, the honest truth is that it may not be for everyone. Bob Grant wrote The Women That Men Adore and Never Want to Leave based upon his experience as a certified counselor. As a result, much of the content is based upon the crisis' and troubles that women who typically might seek out the help of a counselor. Women who are married or in serious relationships are usually those that one might find talking with a counselor on a regular basis about the troubles they are having in their relationship.
This is not to say that the information is weak or that The Women That Men Adore and Never Want to Leave targets middle class housewives or that the advice will only work on the men that these women love. But it does stand to reason that some of the information might not be relevant to those in relationships that are less than serious.
On the other hand, men are men, right? Men are flesh and bone no matter what their position in society and thus they have the same needs, wants and desires. No different than the fact that most dogs like to be petted and have their bellies rubbed, most men like and appreciate the same attributes in women that all men find attractive and desirable.
One thing that The Women That Men Adore and Never Want to Leave is not is a book on how to get your ex back by using deceitful or underhanded tactics. Although the advice given by Mr. Grant is helpful in rekindling the passion and romance in your relationship, it is not some cheesy step by step plan on how to get your ex back in 7 days or the like.
Yes, it might be easy to see how the information in The Women That Men Adore and Never Want to Leave could be used to rebuild a relationship that has been severed due to breakup or divorce. It also might be helpful even for single women who want some insight into what men do find desirable in a woman and how a woman can be herself and bring out the passionate and romantic side in a man. That is the premise of this book in a nutshell, actually. There is no trickery or pretending to be something that you're not, which you should find both refreshing and easy to do, right? You want him to love you for you and not because you are pretending to be something that you're not.
Of course, there are bits and pieces of advice that Mr. Grant offers in his book that you can use word for word to bring about a desired reaction in a man and different tactics that may be considered a bit deceitful because you are doing something in hopes of bringing about a desired outcome. But we are not talking about lying or hurting anyone and you goal is to make your man happy so how can that be wrong? Once you know what makes him happy his natural response will be to want to make you happy.
To sum it up, Bob Grant's The Women That Men Adore and Never Want to Leave isn't a get him back book in the traditional sense. If that is what you're looking for then this book may not be the right choice for you. If you are a woman in a relationship that has lost it's passion and fire and you want to know what has worked for other women then you might be on the right track. If you have tried just about everything to win your man's heart and he just doesn't seem to be interested in you any longer this book might help you understand what might help move your man to fall in love with you all over again. If you are a single woman and you want some insight into what might make you more desirable to men it might be worth checking out.

Can Michelle Penney's Kissing 101 Teach You Anything About Kissing?

You might think that you have your kissing technique down to a science. After all, you've never had any complaints from your partner or even any of your ex's either, for that matter. What is there to kissing anyhow? Sure you might have been awkward and didn't know what you were doing when you were a kid but with experience you feel pretty sure that you know how to kiss. Or do you?
Kissing really can be one of the most overlooked and yet most important parts of a relationship. What Michelle Penney's Kissing 101 hopes to teach the world is basic kissing techniques as well as more advanced techniques and some fun stuff that is sure to enhance your relationship right from the get go.
If you are unsure of how to kiss or maybe you wonder if your partner really likes the way you kiss then perhaps it's time for some tutoring. Of course, if you tried to hire a tutor to teach you how to kiss your partner might have some problems with this. The next best thing would be to get some good advice from an expert in the field, namely Michelle Penney. As a matter of fact, even those that feel that they really know what they're doing and consider themselves kissing experts might be surprised by some of the basic tips and techniques in Kissing 101. For most of us kissing is something that we really don't think about and when it is shown to us or discussed it can often bring to light some important things that we might have been missing out on over the years. Does that make sense?
Or perhaps you have found that special someone and you really want to knock their socks off with that first kiss. Maybe they are that important to you that you don't want to leave anything to chance and you want that first kiss to be perfect and special and, of course, you want them to want to come back for more! Maybe you want to know everything that there possibly is to know about French kissing or how to really turn your partner on when you're making out by expanding your kissing geography but you're not sure of where and when. Relax! Michelle Penney goes over all of this and more in Kissing 101... and you'll even get some tips on how to practice kissing if you don't have anyone to practice with. Who does anyhow? Although that might be a great pickup line!
One of the neat things that many people liked about Michelle Penney's Kissing 101 was the detail that Michelle Penney went into along with exercises that you can do to practice without feeling weird and illustrations to show you exactly what she is talking about. Others really liked the fun way that Michelle explains everything and her enthusiasm definitely comes out in her book. This woman loves her work and it shows in not only her writing style but also the valuable advice that she gives in Kissing 101.
Others enjoyed and found the advanced techniques and tips very interesting and said that they discovered fun and erotic things that they could do with their partner that they had never even thought of. Things that enhanced the passion and intimacy between them and their partner using the unique tips offered by Michelle Penney in Kissing 101; fun activities involving things like ice cubes and different kissing games you can play with your partner.
But is Kissing 101 for everyone? Not necessarily. I am sure that there are people out there that have their kissing technique down and have little need for information on how to actually kiss, although they might have some fun with some of the more advanced techniques and ideas. But basically, Michelle Penney wrote Kissing 101 for those of us that are nervous about kissing, those who want to learn more and those of us who aren't natural born passionate kissers. Yes, there are quite a few of them out there and if you doubt it just ask a woman if she ever went out with a guy that didn't know how to kiss. Don't let this be you! Learn how to kiss. It might be one of the most useful and practical skills that you ever learn in your life.

Smart Women Finish Rich

A few weeks ago, my mom gave me a book called Smart Women Finish Rich (the Canadian Edition) by David Bach for my birthday. At first, I didn't get too excited because...although I am smart (heehee) and WANT to finish rich... I didn't think this book was going to really affect my life very much.
I have just finished reading the book and realize I was wrong in thinking the book would not have an impact. I wish I had gotten my hands on it 20 years ago! But as David says... it is never too late to start.
Smart Women Finish Rich is an easy to understand 9 step guide on how to think about money in terms of your values, set goals for yourself, and get your financial life organized. It puts in plain writing what exactly you need to do and how to do it. It really helped me sort out my finances and put a plan in place.
Although the book is written by a man, it was inspired by his grandmother who was a knowledgeable investor that lived within her means, yet retired a millionaire. Now, in his book, David shares what all women SHOULD know but don't... either because they are too busy to learn, don't know where to start, or simply leave the finances to their husband--a big mistake.
I highly highly highly recommend this book to any woman (or man) who simply wants to learn how to achieve financial security while at the same time being able to fund the life they dream of living. It is easier than you think if you simply learn how.
Rebecca Ness is healthy, green mom who works from home and is passionate about helping other stay-at-home moms empower themselves personally and financially.

Cheating Men's Crazy Reverse Technique

If You Want Closure in your Relationship, Start With Your Legs: A Guide to Understanding Men
Big Boom
Former womanizer Big Boom's done it all when it came to taking advantage of the women who loved him. As an apology for the pain he's caused almost every woman he's dated, If You Want Closure is an earnest guide to understanding men. Whether you're trying to understand why you attract cheating dogs, can't find a man who can take you seriously, or simply want a refresher on keeping your husband's respect, Boom's book is a revitalizing read.
The Reverse Technique: Have You Been Suckered?
Boom dives into the truth about men and the games they play with startling accuracy. When you read this book, you'll remember so many times in the past where a man acted in a curious, even erratic matter, and you'll finally understand what motivated his behavior. Here's a following example:
Has your husband ever confessed to cheating on you? After doing so, did he start packing his bags while he promised to leave and never return and break your heart again? If so, did you stop him and beg him to stay, saying, "Baby, please don't leave. Let's save our marriage! We can talk about this?"
Depending on what happened next, you've definitely been played for a sucker, especially if he agreed to stay provided that you agree to certain conditions, namely not to ask him any details of his sexual affairs with other women. Big Boom refers to this slick trick as the reverse technique, and the information alone is worth the purchase price of this book.
Invest Wisely in Your Love Life
Boom's straight-to-the-point words empower you to take control of your relationships with men. Boom teaches you to put your foot down and demand the respect and love you deserve in your marriage, or even while dating casually. Simply put, some time with Boom will cost less than a new outfit and will help you far longer than that cheaply written romance article that falsely claims the way to a bad boy's heart is sex. (Or food, but if he can't even act right, why would you bother cooking for him?)
Overall, Big Boom packs a wealth of brutally honest information about men, both good and bad, and the games, thoughts, rules and values they live by in this 199 page guide. A bonus section includes several well-thought and planned questions every woman needs to ask any man who shows an interest in her.
Whether you're a single lady or shop for your family, you tend to shop wisely, making financial decisions with care. Every purchase is an investment, whether for your health, beauty or daily living needs, at the highest quality possible within your budget.
You make careful investments in other areas of your life, so why not do the same with your love life?

The Get Your Man Back System - Make Him Committed to You

The Get Your Man Back System should be considered as a valuable resource for women who are either going through a breakup or can see a breakup coming on the horizon. Rarely in a relationship does a breakup come completely out of the blue. There are often warning signs that women either ignore or just hope will pass in time. In all actuality, breakups normally follow a common road with sign posts along the way that should be telling you that things are heading towards a breakup. A man will usually begin to withdraw and become distant before severing that tie with a woman thus making the breakup a little more justified and so he can say that he hadn't been happy for a long time. Even breakups that happen after a big argument or one particular incident usually have tell tale signs along the way that should have told a partner that things were about to come to a head.
The Get Your Man Back System is a program that promises to help solve those problems and repair your relationship. It promises to make your man commit to you and only you if you are feeling that your relationship is either on the rocks or if he has already broken up with you. Created by Elaine M.D., the Get Your Man Back System is said to be a proven plan for creating that connection if your man has broken up with you or you can feel him becoming distant or pulling away by helping dissect the relationship and show you what you may have been doing all along the way that caused your man to become distant and withdrawn.
In her book, Elaine, explains why men pull away and break up with women by giving you a glimpse into what goes on inside a man's mind when they become distant and what you can do to reel him back in. Although this information is a bit controversial and goes against what most women think that a man wants, and even what most men say that they want, the techniques have proven very effective in creating the attraction that he once had for you and causing a man to commit to you. The author explains that her system focus's specifically on the male/female relationship and what women do unknowingly to destroy their relationship and what effect their actions have upon men. Her research for The Get Your Man Back System comes from hundreds of consultations with women in over 50 countries and an in depth analysis of what these women did to not only cause the breakup but what they did to get their man back.
What makes The Get Your Man Back System really unique is the approach that it takes to solving your relationship problems. This is not a one solution for every type of relationship or situation. The information is actually tailored to suit the situation so the solution that you might receive for your particular relationship won't necessarily be the same advice that is given to another woman who has gone through a different situation. One size does not always fit all and what is good for the goose isn't good for the gander; what works for women doesn't necessarily work for men too.
The hardest part of any relationship that seems to be spiraling out of control is figuring out what you can do to fix things. It can be rather frustration and can cause a lot of anxiety because if you could fix it you certainly would! But if you feel like everything that you do winds up pushing him further away...you try being nicer and it pushes him away...you try being tougher and it pushes him away...you give him some time and space and you get nothing...well, then perhaps the information in The Get Your Man Back System can shed some light on your situation and what you can do to fix things. If you are in a situation like this then you don't have a whole lot to lose and everything to gain from the insight that has worked for others in your same situation.
As easy as it might be to just sit back and see how things play out, a little knowledge and some insight into what is actually going on might mean the difference between happily ever after and seeing him head off into another relationship with another woman. The choice is up to you but the information that has worked for others is at your disposal.

What Women Want - A Book

Do you want to know what women want? Of course you do. A new book that offers advice from women around the world can help.
The book also includes advice from celebrities. Madonna, Demi Moore and Cameron Diaz share their views on dating in "That's What She Said: Women Reveal What Mean Really Need to Know." The book was put together by Punk'd producer TJ Jefferson. Moore's husband, Ashton Kutcher, writes a forward in the book.
Amazon.com touts the book as a good one for men and women to read together.
In the 224 page paperback book, you can find more than 100 tips from women around the world.
According to the description on Amazon, if you are looking for a one-night stand, this book is not going to help. "For men, it's not a book on how to get a woman to go home with you but on how to keep her attention once you have it. And for women, think of it as an entertaining look at what other ladies are going through. You may find vindication ("amen, sister") or put it down, relieved that you aren't "as crazy as her" or that your man isn't a complete cad."
The Amazon says the book includes sections on love, sex, beauty, lying, and listening and is "the ultimate look into the mind of today's modern woman."
"As a man I could only guess what women wanted us to know," Jefferson writes. "Sometimes you gotta go to the source. If you're toilet is backed up you don't call your dentist, you call a plumber. If you want to know something about a woman, do what I did - ask her. Trust me. She'll be more than happy to let you know what's on her mind."
Here are some tips that Moore, Madonna and Diaz gave:
"If you want to get our clothes off focus on what you're giving, not on what you can get! You may be able to score once - but we can smell the stink of selfish desires a mile away and are not interested." Moore says.
Madonna was brutally honest as always: "Women are here to smash man's ego, plain and simple. Accept this and life will be better."
Diaz wants to lose herself in the "wonder of love, beauty and sexiness."
One woman interviewed said that all women want significantly different things and that there is a huge difference between what a girl wants and what a woman wants. She says in order for a relationship to be successful each person needs to maintain their own separate life apart from their relationship as a couple.
Every woman wants you to tell you she is beautiful in the morning since that is generally when they are at their worst, one woman says. This is great advice for everyone who wants to be a pua.
"If you cheat, don't lie," she writes. "We ALWAYS know. Hello! Women's intuition. We can work with the truth NOT with lies... you dig yourselves a deeper grave. Remember that."
She also says only give advice when women ask for it. And "Don't treat us like nuns in a convent. We like to get down and freaky, too."

So Sexy So Soon - The New Sexualized Childhood

So Sexy So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect Their Kids
Diane Levin, Ph. D. and Jean Kilbourne, Ed. D.
Ballantine Books, New York, 2008
211 pages
Angeles Arrien (author of The Four-Fold Way) once said, "When we lose touch with our inner wisdom, we abnormalize the normal and normalize the abnormal." What was considered crazy, disgusting, or taboo yesterday could become status quo, even necessary, tomorrow-if we aren't paying close attention to our own internal guidance system. But that's not so easy to do anymore. Today's commercialized culture pushes limits for market share and bombards with mass-delivered influential, often aberrant messages-making it increasingly difficult for moms and dads to function from their "wise selves."
An extremely disturbing trend is the counterfeit culture's sexualization of children. From early childhood through adolescence today's kids are bombarded with negative gender images and skewed messages about sexuality. Twenty years ago, for instance, when I was raising my children, it would have been unheard of, even unspeakable, for manufacturers to market thongs for seven year-old girls. Yet today, crazy as it is, that's what's happening. So Sexy So Soon provides many other equally distressing examples of how our innocents are now just cogs in the "sex sells" marketing wheel. The impact is profound. So Sexy So Soon demonstrates the critical urgency of the issue and beautifully articulates what can be done about it by parents and by all of us working together to stop this insidious form of child abuse. (The authors remind us that the thong is the stripper's clothing of choice, in case we have forgotten.)
Diane Levin is professor of education at Wheelock College and has been involved in training early childhood professionals for more than twenty-five years. She has worked extensively in the field of media-related issues, and is an internationally recognized expert on the effects of violence, media, and commercial culture on children, and speaks often on these subjects. She is the author or co-author of seven books including Remote Control Childhood? and The War Play Dilemma. Jean Kilbourne, a Senior Scholar at the Wellesley Centers for Women is internationally recognized for her pioneering work on the image of women in advertising. A popular lecturer, The New York Times Magazine named her one of the three most popular speakers on college campuses. She has produced award-winning films, including the Killing Us Softly series and is the author of Can't Buy My Love: How Advertising Changes the Way We Think and Feel.
Either one of these remarkable women could have alone written So Sexy So Soon. I'm glad they decided to team up, instead. The combined wealth of each of their backgrounds and expertise bring a rich tapestry of ideas, examples, and suggestions. The ultimate power of the book is their compelling united voice-not only as professionals pioneering this work, but also as mothers. By sharing parenting examples of their own fears, questions, and successes, (We even get treated to a piece on what parents of teens need to do by Jean's then twenty-year old daughter, Claudia) they give us hope. It's nice to know we are not alone in the trenches-even experts don't have all the answers. Yet, if we do a few things right-like keep connected to our kids and our love for them, lots can work out well. Even experts get lucky.
By admitting that this is a complex issue with no quick fixes and by giving practical "how tos" the authors provide both a thoughtful analysis of the problem as well as an effective action handbook. The comprehensive resources they've gathered are well- selected seminal books and organizations. There is something for everyone here. So Sexy So Soon will serve useful well beyond its copyright date because of the thorough research, practical activities, and fine resources.
Beginning with a discussion of what is normal and what is not normal, Levin and Kilbourne lay out the issue of sex, sexualized children and teens, along with the objectification this brings, linking the sexualization to consumerism clearly:
"But sex in commercial culture has far more to do with trivializing and objectifying sex than with promoting it, more to do with consuming than connecting. The problem is not that sex as portrayed in the media is sinful, but that it is synthetic and cynical. The exploitation of our children's sexuality is in many ways designed to promote consumerism, not just in childhood but throughout their lives." (p. 9)
Chapter 3 gives important guidelines about how young children are likely to think about sexual images based on their stage of development. This is an extremely helpful tool, especially since it is coupled with a discussion of the key concepts that parents need to effectively address the problem. "Children are learning lessons from today's sexualized environment that can undermine the very foundations they need in order to grow up to be capable of having caring relationships of any kind, including those relationships in which sex plays a role." (p. 71) Much useful information is given for teens, too. What happens when the sexualized child enters adolescence? Levin and Kilbourne let you know. Parents may be shocked by some of the information. I doubt, for instance, if many moms and dads realize just how accessible porn stars are to their kids through Internet marketing. "Lauren Phoenix, star of scores of porn films...sells tube socks to teens in American Apparel ads, and porn queen Jenna Jameson has launched her own fashion line." (p. 143)
The "clash of cultures" between what parents want for their children-the family culture-and what the commercial culture actually pushes to their children, forms a backdrop for So Sexy So Soon. The authors know that it is parents, as well as their children that suffer because of this. "In a 2002 survey of parents of five-to-seventeen year olds, almost half reported that their biggest challenge was trying to protect their children from the negative influences of the outside world." (p. 75)
Levin and Kilbourne give many examples of struggles to understand and mitigate the commercial culture's influences on children and teens-examples any modern-day parent or teacher can relate to. Several of the examples are given in detail. In these the reader has the opportunity to journey with the parent (or pull her hair out with the parent) as he or she struggles to figure out how to respond to a little girl crying because she "is too fat," for instance. In addition to providing parental dilemmas, the authors give explicit examples of how to talk to children about these issues; what to pay attention to while we are listening to our child talk about these issues; and important questions to ask and why.
Chapter 6 focuses on "the power of connecting deeply with children," and gives sentence-by-sentence dialogue with the mother and the little girl who thinks she is too fat, alongside a commentary by the authors with explanations for the suggestions given. If you don't have a lot of time, you could start the book here. There are other excellent examples given in Chapter 6 as well. These show the potential responsiveness of children when we relate to them and the elimination of parental fear when we understand how our children are thinking about potentially contentious issues. The book demonstrates that listening deeply, asking non-judgmental questions; keeping a clear head; and finding out all the facts-go a long way to supporting our children's healthy development while lessening possible negative impacts.
The authors conclude by calling us to get involved in "creating a new cultural environment" with twelve excellent and do-able choices. Obviously, we cannot let commercialized sexualization of children become normalized. Levin and Kilbourne quote Cordelia Anderson, who reminds us, "'once something becomes normalized, it becomes the wallpaper of our existence-we don't see it, we accept it as just the way it is and we are numbed to seeing any ill effects or taking action to change it,'" (p. 178) So Sexy So Soon motivates us to productive action on behalf of our children, de-numbing our society in the process.

Staging Your Comeback

Bravo for the book entitled, "Staging Your Comeback" by Christopher Hopkins. Women over 45 will love this makeover book. A good book is one you wish you had written yourself, but someone beat you to it. Mr. Hopkins is a hair stylist who dedicated this book to his mother.
Christopher Hopkins created this book for the women over 45. He acknowledges that the beauty and fashion industry gears ads and products to young women and ignores the aging woman. He used some of his clients for the makeovers in this book. He gave grace and dignity to the mature woman.
Mr. Hopkins made a few comments about observations I've noticed as well and would love to be able to say. He said it for those of us with like minded thinking. The first and most important mistake is the thong. Not everyone can or should wear or display one. Let's face, it's time to cover up and start using the body shaper. This goes for the young ones as well. You may think it's sexy, but it belongs behind closed doors.
The second mistake is displaying too much cleavage. He has a humorous way of putting it. If when you cross your arms it looks like lace or wrinkled paper, it's time to cover up. The right bra is essential. That means you need to wear one. Again, this goes for the young ones as well.
The third mistake is the midriff. If it rolls out, it's time to cover it up. Are you hearing this ladies? This is a man who said these things. Would you rather be noticed to attempting to look sexy or being successful as looking classy?
The fourth mistake women make as they gray is giving up on hair, makeup and style. Although the time comes when you finally decide to stop dying hair, a good cut can keep it looking fresh. Makeup can still be worn but softened up. If you still have your shape, don't give up on fitted clothes. Just make sure they look tailored but not clingy.
Christopher has noticed the change in his clients' disposition when they have a makeover. Women who had given up on things they used to love, went back to them after a transformation of style and outlook on life.
Well, I plan on looking my best as long as possible. I'm 46 now. I plan on dying my hair at least until 50. I plan on wearing makeup as long as I can apply it. Mineral makeup is a godsend. I hope there will be no elastic pants for me. This book will keep me going for quite a while.

The Woman Men Adore - Do You Understand Your Man?

The Woman Men Adore by Bob Grant is a relationship guide that presents the tools and techniques women can use to improve the relationship they are already in or attract pretty much any man they want.
In this 11 chapter, 115 page book, topics such as 'What Men Really Want' and the 'Secrets of a Great Relationship' are covered. My overall impression of the book is that it enables women to understand how men think and why they think the way they do.
Once women have been empowered with the knowledge of what makes men really tick, it is then up to them to use the innate skills they were born with to improve their relationship.
This makes sense to me because as women we clearly see things from a different viewpoint. If we were privy to a guy's innermost thoughts on relationships, it should be fairly easy to get him to adore us and never want to leave.
In my opinion this books stands out from the many and varied literary attempts out there giving advice on how to win and keep your man. I enjoyed this book because it really shows you how you can have a healthy and loving relationship without having to shape yourself into someone else just to keep the guy interested in you.
The real secret revealed is that men want to be lured, possessed and seduced by a woman. If you can make a man feel good about himself he will gladly surrender to you.
One of our main problems as women, I think, is that we look for relationship advice in all the wrong places. We ask our girlfriends, who have just as many problems as us, or we flip through magazine articles written by women hoping for that one piece of advice that will magically transform our relationship. Problem is, most of this advice steers us in the wrong direction.
With Bob Grant's, "The Woman Men Adore and Never Want to Leave", you are receiving advice from someone who really understands men and the way they think. Mr. Grant has been a successful Licensed Professional Relationship Counselor and coach for over 16 years.
Wouldn't you rather get relationship advice from someone who is a relationship expert? I know I would!
What I read on page 110 of The Woman Men Adore was worth the price of the book. Bob Grant reveals 3 sentences you can say to your man that will virtually cast a spell over him and have him looking for ways to please you!

The Magic of Making Up

The Magic of Making Up is a PDF ebook that deals with broken relationships. Written by T.W. Jackson, it is 62 pages covering everything you need to know to save the relationship.
Starting with the first chapter, Why Your Relationship Ended, it will blow your mind how common the problems in your relationship are. They are always the same things, and the fixes are always the same things as well.
While it was written to help people get back with someone they lost, it goes farther than that. It will help you understand and correct the problems for any couple even if the breakup has yet to happen but is imminent.
I got it to review, but I ended up emailing it to my wife and making her read the first chapter. I has really helped us to see each other and our roles in a better light and eliminated a lot of the problems we were having.
If your heart is breaking, it is best to do nothing but prepare for the time when you are able to take rational action. Taking the time to understand what went wrong and how to fix it will take your mind off of the negative things. It will also ensure you do the right things from the start to ensure you can fix the relationship. And just importantly, it will give you time to consider if you really want them back or if it is really yourself you are looking for.
The Magic of Making Up is not a book about getting your ex back. It does that, but it is so much more. It is a guide to building a healthy relationship from the beginning, even if it is not the second chance.

Hunger, Eating Disorders, and Family Ties

When I began reading Hungry, A Mother and Daughter Fight Anorexia by Sheila and Lisa Himmel, the complexity of eating disorders really began to sink in. Food-related addictions are like any other addiction, except for the fact that is it impossible to avoid coming into contact with the object of the obsession.
Characterized by an obsessive fear of gaining weight and refusal to maintain a healthy body weight due to a distorted self-image, anorexia is all about obsession, and in fact, has a high incidence of comorbidity with obsessive compulsive personality disorder. It also has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder. According to a study by the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders, 5 - 10% of anorexics die within 10 years after contracting the disease; 18-20% of anorexics will be dead after 20 years and only 30 - 40% ever fully recover. The mortality rate associated with anorexia nervosa is 12 times higher than the death rate of ALL causes of death for females 15 - 24 years old. The South Carolina Department of Mental Health shares these staggering statistics. It is estimated that 8 million Americans have an eating disorder - seven million women and one million men. One in 200 American women suffers from anorexia Two to three in 100 American women suffers from bulimia Nearly half of all Americans personally know someone with an eating disorder (Note: One in five Americans suffers from mental illnesses.) An estimated 10 - 15% of people with anorexia or bulimia are males.
Unhealthy diets and physical inactivity are to blame for hundreds of thousands deaths each year, with approximately 100 million Americans categorized as obese. Still, 8 million people suffering from an eating disorder is a significant number too. Unlike other addictions, recovery from an eating disorder cannot happen in a vacuum. As Sheila points out in the book's introduction, "you can't just say no to food. At work, at home, on the street, America is a twenty-four hour buffet." To make things worse, "society prizes thinness for women" at the same time as it promotes fast convenience foods at every turn. With the growing national angst over obesity, the plot thickens along with the waistlines.
It is this conflict, like the push/pull in a great novel, that makes this nonfiction book so compelling, and so disturbing. Published last August, the account of a young woman's battle with anorexia and bulimia brings to our attention the many conflicting messages that we give and receive in our family relationships. While feeding our children is how we nurture them from the time they are born; as they grow older, we have less and less control over what, when, how, where, and why they eat. Throughout most childhoods, food is alternately used as nourishment, reward, comfort, bribe, love, punishment, and ritual. In Lisa's family, with her mother's job as a food writer and her father's love of gourmet, food was even a bigger part of the conversation. Whether this was a contributing factor, or just a coincidence, it's impossible to know.
As the Himmel's found when they searched for explanations for Lisa's eating disorder, there are certain "causes or triggers" that showed up on almost every list of factors: society's worship of ultra-thinness, anorexic mother or sister, parents highly focused on appearance, trauma, perfectionist personality, genetic predisposition to the disorder. The genetic predisposition is a biggie. According to Wikipedia, inheritance rates range are estimated between 56-84%.
I have had long looks into the kitchens and dining rooms of two of my closest friends, who have alluded to dark periods as young women when they flirted with eating disorders. One of them fought it off with such gusto, she now refuses to impose any limits on junk food in her home. She resented even the attempts of some parents to ban soda machines from her children's school. The other is incapable of shaking the feeling that with one wrong bite, obesity will not be just her own destiny, but her husband and children's as well.
How much of the heritable factor is due to the environment created and maintained by a parent and how much is due to the genes directly inherited from that parent? And does it matter? Just as it is ludicrous to assume that the patient has control over the disorder, it seems equally so to expect the parent with a similar history to be able to change her own skewed perspective.
There are no easy answers. One friend, a pediatrician, scoffs at the idea of tip-toeing around the topic of dieting with overweight teens. At the same time, many girls and women who have fallen prey to an eating disorder, say they can identify the exact phrase that started them down that torturous path.
Beyond exploring just the personal and social roots of Lisa's anorexia, Sheila looks at the historical roots as well. She compares the current views of eating disorders to past views of diseases like cancer, and tuberculosis. The mystery and shame that surrounded these illnesses causes the same sense of self-blame in patients with eating disorders. There is the notion, as with most mental health issues, that "the patients have brought it on themselves," and that they should just "get over it."
The Himmels' memoir is an important and valuable tool for all of us, whether we or someone we love is suffering from an eating disorder... or not. Developing an awareness of our society's tendency towards obsession about food, appearance, and health is a critical step in the journey to regaining moderation and balance in our own lives and the lives of others.

Women Have All the Power

These days, quality relationship books for women seem to be few and far between. One book will tell you having more sex will keep him from cheating, and another will tell you that never telling your cheating husband that you know about his affair is the best thing to do.
Trust me, I understand that not every book is going to have all the answers, but overall, what I'm missing from book publishers these days are simple: authenticity and reality. These days, it's as if publishers deliberately publish nonsense in order to keep us in the dark, perhaps so we can desperately buy the next "solution" they've put forth for us when the new bestseller no longer brings in revenue.
In spite of this, I've discovered several great gems while sorting through the mud pit, the most recent of which is Women Have All the Power: Too Bad They Don't Know It. If you're truly ready for information that will open your eyes to a new perspective on relationships, this book is a natural read that thoroughly breaks down the missteps women have taken in their relationships by giving control over to men who don't deserve it in an effort to gain love. (Notice I said "men who don't deserve it", not "men period".)
"[Women Have All the Power] is ultimately about men and interacting with them," explains author Michael Lockwood in the Introduction. "Not being able to handle yourself and your self-esteem as it relates to men can be devastating."
Lockwood's inspiration for writing is to provide knowledge about relationships to his own three little girls, who aren't old enough to read or comprehend the material. However, as a family man himself, Lockwood also understands that every woman, no matter how she carries herself, is still someone else's daughter, and thus, he seeks to provide knowledge to them as well, especially if the absence of a father figure has adversely affected their ability to connect respectfully with men throughout their lives.
Book Synopsis & Breakdown
Broken down into seven basic chapters, Lockwood starts off with the chapter Aren't You Tired?,where he discusses the core issue that has kept, and continues to keep, women powerless within their relationships with men. This is a shockingly simple, easily fixable problem, he maintains, shifts a disproportionate amount of power to the men in these women's lives who have no issue taking advantage of this high-level vulnerability.
Manology chapter follows up with a strongly backed lesson on men, what they're like, their thought process and their mannerisms. You won't be surprised to hear Lockwood remind you that men are literally very simple creatures, but you may be interested to learn his 10 rules for making a man chase you, the best places to meet men of character, and alarming red flags that let you know he may not be the one for you.
Stay in Your Lane gets to the heart of why reveling in your traditional role as a woman allows a real man to step up into his traditional role as a man, and how you can use this to your advantage while searching for the one. This chapter also touches on the truth about submission, and why submitting to your husband or boyfriend does not mean allowing yourself to be stepped on, but allowing him to demonstrate his leadership abilities (another thing you should look for in a quality mate).
Keeping the "Piece" and "Give Him a Peace" are chapters on how to manage two important factors within your relationship that every man needs: sex and peace of mind. You'll be given explicitly detailed suggestions on how to respectfully manage sex with your man while dating, as well as things you should do that demonstrate your ability to be a sensual, loving and supportive virtuous woman, one he will be proud to bring home to his mother, as well as brag about around his friends.
The New School Woman and No War and "Piece" discuss the challenges and observations brought up by the shift in today's non-traditional society, including the obstacles women and men face when it comes to planning a family while enjoying a career, keeping the lines of communication open for sexual intimacy and non-sexual marital intimacy and how to create a harmonic balance in your marriage.
Is It Worth the Read?
Yes, yes and yes! Women Have All the Power is an intensely enjoyable, honest book written from a father's perspective. This is not the book a shy and timid father would give his daughters, one that would only say "Keep your legs closed and don't be fast." Nor is it an non-engaging essay about how women don't get what it takes to keep a man happy, and if they don't just jump through all his specified hoops that he'll cheat.
This book is wisely written with the seasoned words of a man who has been there, has done it, and has observed it. Lockwood's candor might be a little much for someone who would rather hear a politically correct, words minced instructional on how to politely keep a man interested and happy, but at the end of the day, as fed up as you are with constantly attracting the wrong men in your life, you'll gladly overlook this to get to the truth.

In Praise of Difficult Women

Elizabeth Wurtzel's 'Bitch: In Praise of Difficult Women' celebrates strong and defiant women from biblical femme fatale Delilah to beloved Princess Diana to notorious Courtney Love. Deriving evidence from literary and theologian scholars to empowered women portrayed in music, literature, and the movies, Wurtzel argues that society tends to devalue women who break the rules, diminishing their power and strength to sexual wiles and manipulative destruction of men as a means of keeping them down, beneath men, beneath power. This book chronicles and defends strong, virile women who have lived outside and beyond the prescribed rules society inscribes upon their bodies and individuality, and who have been punished for it, one way or another.
A Harvard graduate and social commentator, Elizabeth Wurtzel's prose is like poetry -- not the whimsical and romantic type that is expected of women, but that of a force to be reckoned with. It is not romantic or soft, but fine and intelligent, sometimes harsh and biting, but continually knowledgeable and well-researched. Wurtzel points out that historically, biblically, socially, and politically women continue to be blamed for men's destruction. Like Eve, the belief continues, women use beauty and sex to seduce and destroy men in power, men with strong resolve. She argues that men should be held accountable for their own demise. If women are weak and inferior and men are strong and superior, then how is it possible for little women to have such power over tough men? If men can fight wars and govern nations, then how is it that they cannot overcome the seduction of a minor character, an inferior being. She argues that "this notion that women drag men down with sex...is the basis for too much silliness -- it is the reason why rape victims are not named but alleged rapists are -- implying that the former, not the latter, should be ashamed because she must have made him do it -- she drove him to a felonious act...Women don't bring men down; for whatever reason, men bring themselves down, and then all of a sudden it's chercher la femme".
This is a powerful book with an even more powerful message that articulates how female strength and power has been appropriated and misinterpreted by male writers, theologians, and scholars. Since the time of Eve and Delilah to the present, strong women have been looked upon with negativity and derision, their power over men diminished to the manipulative use of their beauty and sexual prowess, even if they were not beautiful or sexy to begin with; but the blame had to go somewhere for man's downfall, and of course, the man could not blame himself. It's a great book with an empowering message towards redefining the way we look at female sexuality and female strength, and I recommend it to all women and young girls who want to find their power and agency outside of the wiles of their femininity.

Home Girls - A Black Feminist Anthology

Roaming the blogosphere as I am wont to do, I came across a challenge on calyx press' blog. Of course, at 43, I do not qualify as a "young feminist" (if I ever did) but still it set me to thinking about my intentions to write a review of Home Girls: A Black Feminist Anthology.
To a young woman unanchored, on the verge of being culturally divorced from self, the anthology was one of a series of buoys clung to and devoured like I was a member of the Donner party - not the daughter of Salma. Comprising both poetry and prose, the book represents discussions black women were having with other black women - and society in general - about what it means to be a black woman. The scope of the conversation is wide-ranging. It includes the Combahee River Collective Statement which includes articulations such as
This focusing upon our own oppression is embodied in the concept of identity politics. We believe that the most profound and potentially most radical politics come directly out of our own identity, as opposed to working to end somebody else's oppression. In the case of Black women this is a particularly repugnant, dangerous, threatening, and therefore revolutionary concept because it is obvious from looking at all the political movements that have preceded us that anyone is more worthy of liberation than ourselves. We reject pedestals, queenhood, and walking ten paces behind. To be recognized as human, levelly human, is enough.
I'm not entirely clear on the concept of identity politics. However, it does strike me as the essence of self-determination to push your own cause. In the case of black women, the cause should be black women. Home Girls is one of the spots along my literary read trail where I realized it was acceptable, revolutionary even, to come out from the background, open my mouth and express my full self.
Home Girls is also where I first encountered the work of poet Kate Rushin. Her poem, the Black Back-ups,
is dedicated to Merry Clayton, Cissy Houston, Vonetta Washington, Dawn, Carrietta McClellen, Rosie Farmer, Marsha Jenkins and Carolyn Williams. This is for all of the Black women who sang back-up for Elvis Presley, John Denver, James Taylor, Lou Reed, Etc, Etc, Etc.
...This is for Hattie McDaniels, Butterfly McQueen, Ethel Waters

Aunt Jemima on the Pancake Box?

Ainchamamaonthepancakebox?
Aint chure Mama on the pancake box?
Mama Mama
Get offa that damn box
And come home to me
And my Mama leaps offa that box
She swoops down in her nurse's cape
Which she wears on Sunday
And on Wednesday night prayer meeting
And she wipes my forehead
And she fans my face for me
And she makes me a cup o' tea
And it don't do a thing for my real pain
Except she is my Mama
Mama Mommy Mommy Mammy Mammy
Mam-mee Mam-mee
I'd Walk a mill-yon miles
For one o' your smiles
This is for the Black Back-ups
This is for my mama and your mama
My grandma and your grandma
This is for the thousand thousand Black Back-ups
And the colored girls say*
After reading this poem, I couldn't hear Lou Reed's Walk on the Side as just a song. Instead, it now expressed a relationship where the talent and artistic skill of black women is used to enrich other artists - musically as well as economically. It's Big Mama Thornton and Elvis played out all over the cultural landscape. Or would be - except that Big Mama's daughter wants her mother and wrote a poem about it; a poem which changes the dynamic landscape of understanding.

The Female Brain

The Female Brain is Louann Brizendine's groundbreaking research on what makes women's brain different from men's and what are the biological and psychological components standing behind that difference. Louann Brizendine, M. D., is an acknowledged neurobiologist and a clinical professor currently heading the self-established Women's Mood and Hormone Clinic. The Female Brain is Brizendine's first book published in 2007 and followed by The Male Brain in 2010.
The Female Brain by Louann Brizendine is a thorough scientific study on female mental and emotional performance from childhood through adolescence and young adulthood to the post menopause period. With the main "sex hormones" such as "no cuddling" testosterone and "fluffy, purry kitty" oxytocin being the key characters of the book, the author blows the traditional feministic myth that bringing-up and evolutionary factor are the only "parties at fault" for the different mental structures of women and men.
The scientific language is smoothly moderated by playful and vivid style throughout the book thus making it readable and clear for understanding. However, this book from Louann Brizendine is not a pickup advice oriented book and has only an indirect focus on relationships thus only advanced daters can find it useful and applicable.
Let me try to mark out the essential points in a brief Female Brain review.
THE BAD
The content is too complicated material for beginner and intermediate daters. Not targeted at the dating advice market, the Female Brain is more of a scientific and psychological value. There is a lot of theory, and almost no practice.
THE GOOD
Through a strong research backed up by serious medical and scientific resources the Female Brain draws up a valid substantiation of what makes women behave this or that way in various situations. It will definitely help you understand a woman's specific reactions that you would otherwise consider illogical. This product is ideal for the advanced learners who want to overpass superficial relationships and shock the opposite sex by a unique "mind-reading" ability.
THE BOTTOM LINE
What are the brain chemicals to make men think about sex every few minutes whereas women's mind may afford a sex thought only once a day in average; why do women talk about three times more than men do; what's the physiological "key" to give an almost unlimited access to women's tears as compared with men's innate restraint? These and many more amazing facts are revealed in The Female Brain Louann Brizendine reading which will definitely shape a better understanding of any woman's sexual and psychological character. However, it's worth noting again that all these advantages will be accessible only for an advanced reader.

What to Expect When You Are Expecting

The first thing that my husband did when I told him that I was pregnant was to go to the library and buy the book 'What to Expect When You Are Expecting', by Heidi E. Murkoff.
The book dedicates a chapter for each month and explains the changes that you can expect to experience during each month, the tests that you will have done and pretty much everything that you want to know about. It is a great book. I have to say that I read it from the first page to the last one, but it is also very handy for checking a few things along the way. I highly recommend it to anyone who is considering to get pregnant, start reading it before and it will give you a good idea of how to take care of yourself for the pregnancy (the earlier the better).
The book also shows you different exercise that you can practice during the pregnancy and that will help you to have an easier labour. During my pregnancy I found that keeping active helped me a lot. I didn't suffer any liquid retention or swollen ankles and I think it is because I walked every day until the day that I gave birth. Walking is one of the best exercises that you can do during pregnancy, you do not need any equipment, you are outdoors, you can control the intensity easily, you can do it with friends, you can chat at the same time and even go shopping. And the best part is that it helps to your baby to put himself in the right position for birthing.
After I had my baby a friend bought 'What to Expect During the First Year' as a present for me. I have to admit that I haven't been able to read it as much in detail as I did it with the other one, mainly because once you have the baby it is very difficult to find time to read... so my recommendation is read both during the pregnancy, hehe. It seems very good too, there is one chapter dedicated for each month of the baby's life.
During my pregnancy I read a lot of book and I found many that I could recommend, but if you have to buy just one then I would suggest to buy 'What to expect when you are expecting'.

If I Bring You Roses

Award-winning, first-time novelist Marisel Vera pens an honest, heart-felt, often sad tale of an idealistic, naive Puerto Rican girl named Felicidad who goes to America to be with the man she loves.
The story, told from an author omniscient point of view, begins in the early 1940's in the Puerto Rican countryside and ends about ten years later in Chicago. It follows Felicidad's life from the time she's a young jíbara living in appalling poverty in the mountains to the time she gets married and moves to America.
Young Felicidad lives in a tiny shack with her parents and siblings. Her father works in the fields and can barely support them. At times, Felicidad must be happy with only one meal a day. Their living conditions are so deplorable, she must tie her locks in a bun so that flying roaches in the latrine will not make a nest in her hair. Her sister dies because they can't afford medical care. But worst of all, her mother is losing her mind. Unable to face the situation they're in, one day her mother climbs naked onto the roof. The priest, of course, says she's possessed by the devil.
Then Felicidad is sent to another town to live with her uncle and his wife, who own a panaderia. Though her uncle is kind and quiet most of the times, her aunt finds every opportunity to criticize Felicidad and treat her like a servant. Felicidad, naïve and good-natured, does her best to put up with her. She slaves in the panaderia and remains submissive, but she dreams of a prince who will love her and 'rescue' her one day. Years pass and Felicidad doesn't hear a word from her family. She misses them terribly and would like nothing more than to visit them, but she wonders if the feeling is reciprocated and, afraid of rejection by her own flesh and blood, she stays away from them.
One day, a handsome man walks into the panaderia and Felicidad is swept off her feet. Aníbal Acevedo, a man of the world as far as women go, is taken by Felicidad's innocent beauty. To everyone's shock, a few days later, he asks her to marry him. Felicidad is ecstatic, filled with idealistic illusions of happiness, but is Aníbal capable of fulfilling his dreams, when he has another woman waiting for him in Chicago?
Marisel Vera's prose flows beautifully. In a skillful, often blunt manner, she paints a painfully realistic picture of the jíbaro. In a way, Felicidad's story is a Cinderella story but with an unusual twist. The two protagonists, Felicidad and Aníbal, come to live through the pages, each one so very distinctive from the other. It is especially fascinating to be inside Aníbal's mind and see the world from his perspective, a brutal contrast to Felicidad. Their love story is bitter sweet. But most of all, the author gives us a powerfully sad glimpse of the jíbaro in the 1950's in Chicago, their difficult lives and tribulations, the prejudice they had to confront. Vera is definitely a new Latina voice to be reckoned with, and I look forward to reading more of her work.

Your Practical Pregnancy Planner

The Practical Pregnancy Planner is a unique and easy to read book that breaks down each month of your pregnancy into a wealth of 'need-to-know' information to get expectant parents organized, more in control and ready for the arrival of their baby and new life that lays ahead. At a time when you are probably more excited, during this chaotic time, about your birth and what is going on with your body, it can be easy to neglect the fact that there are some major and permanent life changes afoot.
First time parents, especially, are usually very surprised by the total lack of time (and sleep) they experience once they're holding their beautiful new baby in their arms. To help you truly enjoy your time with your new arrival, worry-free, the practical pregnancy planner is a down-to-earth, must have guide that offers practical advice on your legal rights, your finances and your lifestyle. It is set out in a handy month-by-month structure that will help you take care of the important things that need to be done during this exciting period in your life.
There are certain issues throughout pregnancy, some that you may not even think about, that are best tackled within a certain time-frame in order to keep things running smoothly, the type of things that will inevitably surface later and demand your time and attention when there is little focus or energy left, at the end, except taking care of your new arrival. The book is broken down in monthly chapters with a convenient checklist of things that need to be done, covering everything from legal, financial and lifestyle issues to preparation for labor, postpartum care and parenthood.
It includes things like making a birth plan and packing your hospital bag, evaluating your pregnancy leave options, creating a financial cushion, taking care of life insurance and even down to the simple things like buying maternity clothes, a breast pump or organizing the nursery. There are so many little things to consider that sometimes it may seem a little overwhelming if left to the last minute. Even considering things like your rights for taking time off work before your pregnancy leave date is due, asking for any additional medical tests, understanding hospital policy, life insurance, flexible spending accounts, flying during pregnancy or hiring a nanny (and even whether they would be insured to drive your car if need be).
